BUILDING'S
HISTORY
The
traditional hotel "Ghermaniko" is housed in one of
the oldest buildings of Damouchari, with intense activity during
the whole past century.
The
two-floor house was constructed, completely of stone (fact that
makes its interior resistant even to the highest level of the
summer heat), about the year 1910; period during which Damouchari
and its natural harbour used to serve as supply station of eastern
Pelion. Initially, it was operating as a grocery store and home.
Later, and for a long time, hosted a wine store and an inn for
fishermen, who used to spread their nets on its terrace.
| In
1969 the building was bought by the german Ekart Lau,
who transformed it to hotel. It was about that time, that
Damouchari's touristic evolution began. Ekart promoted
the area and the hotel abroad, and especially in his country.
As a consecuence of that action, in 1974 the very famous,
at the time, actress Romi Schneider passed there her summer
vacation. Because of the german ownership, the building
became known, between the natives and the area's habitues,
with the name "ghermaniko", which in
greek means german. |

This
name, so characteristic of the building, was maintained and
officialised by the new owners (Apostolia Vainopoulou and Olkas
Pascalis family), considering that "ghermaniko" has
its own identity (independent of owners) in Damouchari's environment.
The new holders (with native origin) bought "ghermaniko"
from Ekart Lau in the year 2001 and they proceeded immediately
to its renovation, preserving all traditional elements and adding
new features, neccessary for a pleasnt stay and for the harmonisation
with the standards of modern hoteling.
