Traditional Customs

One of the most popular customs of Pelion that still exists is the "pilioritic wedding". It starts on Wednesday covering the bride and the groom with flour. On Thursday the "wedding bread" is kneaded. On Friday the bride's dowry is transported to the new couple's house. The dowry is put in the family house's yard and the relatives dance around it throwing money. Afterwards, it is loaded on horses for the new home. On Saturday "Stavrodipna" takes place. It is the last party that the bride and the groom have at their family houses. On Sunday there is the ceremony and the big party in tha square of the village.

During the whole procedure of the wedding some unmarried young men, with a foulard on the shoulders, (called "bratimi") help.

On the first of May the custom of "Maydes" was taking place. Young men, on traditional uniforms and with flowers on the hair, used to welcome May dancing with the whole village.
