The story of Damouchari

As each Pelion's mountain village has its bay, Damouchari is part of Mouresi, which is situated higher on the mountain. Being the only natural port on Eastern Pelion, Damouchari has always had unique importance for the area.
It was established by Venezian sailors, when the ships of Venice had conquered the Mediterranean. They built a castle in Damouchari as protection against the pirates and as a station of supplies and rest during their long trips. Even the name of Damouchari derives from them. They say that the Venezians, coming here, were in a hurry to reach the castle and avoid the pirates and they were praying to the Virgin to save them ("dammi chari").    dam1922.jpg (395166 bytes)
Damouchari in 1922

In the beginning of the 20th century, Apostolos Vainopoulos, captain in the commercial navy of England and rich enough, returns to his birth-place and decides to organise the commerce and the transportation of goods on Eastern Pelion. At that time there was no road connecting Volos and Tsagarada or the rest of the villages. Consequently, the provision of food and medicine products was being held through Damouchari's port, where

customs and big stores were operating.

Meanwhile Apostolos Vainopoulos gets married to a greek-romanian lady, Kleopatra Miramare, and he brings her from the cosmopolitan (at that time) Bukurest to isolated Damouchari. Here Kleopatra Miramare feels captured and suffers from depression. At the end, she dies on the birth of her first child. Afterwards Apostolos marries the  baby sitter of the child (which dies, also, three

years old), Victoria, a poor girl from Mouresi. With her he has two children and then he dies on a fire in his house. So, Victoria remains alone with a really big fortune, that wastes and sells to live. Later she marries a man twenty years younger than her and together they have many children.

Today Damouchari, being inhabited by the descendants of the family, is a picturesque summer resort and a refuge for many fishermen. During the summer you can find three tavernas, "Victoria's" mini market, two cafe-bars and of course "Victoria" the hostel and the traditional hotel "Ghermaniko".
